Established in 1994, the Atlantic Agricultural Leadership Program (formerly the New Brunswick Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program) develops emerging agricultural leaders to confidently and courageously shape the future of the Atlantic and Canadian rural and agricultural sectors.

Through workshops, seminars and study tours over an 18-month period, approximately 20 men and women working in Atlantic Canada’s agricultural and associated sectors meet to:

  • develop solid leadership skills;
  • learn how political, cultural, social, economic and physical forces impact the agri-food industry; and,
  • establish networks with leaders from Atlantic Canada and beyond.

Curriculum for Current Class

Year One Sessions

  • What is Leadership, Teamwork, Corporate Sponsorships, Power Point Workshop
  • Media Relations, Agricultural Issues, Chairing Meetings, Roles of Government
  • Public Speaking, Personality Testing, Decision Making, Business Etiquette
  • Examining Agricultural Issues, Listening styles, Leadership Challenge
  • N.A. Study Tour: Canadian Government: People, Policies and Programs; Understanding U.S. Approaches to Agriculture, Trade, Development, Resources and Social Policies

Year Two Sessions

  • Conflict Resolution, Persuasive Speaking, Lobbying
  • Joint Session with New England LEAD Program, Board Governance
  • Strategic Planning, Leading Change, Pre-tour Briefing
  • International Study Tour: Political, Economic and Cultural Comparisons
  • Debrief Study Tour, Program Evaluation, A Look Ahead, Graduation

Included at most seminars:

  • Local tours to meet leaders in agribusiness and other sectors
  • Class meetings to practice parliamentary procedures
  • Power Point presentations by class members to showcase their businesses
  • Agricultural Roundtables and/or Agricultural Panels with political and industry leaders
  • CEO’s from other industries and sectors
  • Agricultural Think Tanks by class members during second year
  • Five fundamental practices of exemplary leadership featured during second year

The Atlantic Agricultural Leadership Program is a registered charity funded through tuition, fundraising events, grants and corporate sponsorships. We welcome participants from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
